Selling to strangers
Sound familiar?
Selling to strangers means the getting-paid part is the hard part. Here’s how it usually goes wrong — and what changes.
The fake screenshot
“He sent me a screenshot that said payment pending. Then a text saying I had to upgrade my account before it would go through.”
With Nilfpay the card payment lands in your account before you leave the house. There is nothing to screenshot. If it isn’t in your Nilfpay account, it wasn’t paid.
The fake check
“The check was for more than I asked. He said just send back the difference. The check bounced two weeks later.”
There is no check. Your buyer pays by card on your link. (The FTC’s advice is simple: never send money back to someone who says they overpaid you.)
Cash only, and the no-show
“Cash only. That’s my rule. But I’ve driven across town three times this month for people who never showed.”
Meet in person if you want to — the money is already yours before you get in the car. Your buyer pays from your link or QR on their phone. Lots of Texas police departments now have a safe-exchange spot in their parking lot. Use one.
The custom order nobody picks up
“I made a three-tier cake for a quinceañera. She never came to get it. I ate the cost and the cake.”
Get paid upfront on custom orders. Send the link when they order. When it’s paid, you bake. It’s a lot harder to flake on something you’ve already paid for.
“Can I just send it on an app?”
“Everybody wants to pay me on a friends-and-family app. Those apps are for friends. This guy is not my friend.”
For strangers, send a card link. It clears before you meet, and it’s tied to a real listing with a real price.

Side by side
How this compares
No editorializing. Here’s what each way of getting paid does — and doesn’t do.
| Nilfpay | Cash meetup | Payment apps | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you pay as the seller | $0. The buyer pays a small service fee at checkout (4%, 50¢ minimum). | $0 | Varies. Many charge a fee on goods or business payments. |
| When the money is yours | Before you meet or deliver. The buyer pays by card on your link or QR. | At the handoff — if the buyer shows up. | When the buyer actually sends it. |
| Bank account needed? | No. Daily payouts to your bank, or cash pickup at Western Union or MoneyGram. | No. | Typically linked to a bank account or debit card. |
| Fake screenshots / fake checks | No check. No screenshot. The card payment is in your Nilfpay account before you leave. | Nothing on a screen — but only if the buyer shows up. | Screenshots can be faked. Most person-to-person apps say they’re for people you know. |
| Custom orders | Get paid upfront, then make it. | You make it first and hope they come. | You can ask for money first. Nothing ties it to a listing or an order. |
| Listing / shop page | Yes. Photo in, AI writes it, shop page + link + QR out. | No. | No shop page or order flow. |
| QR code at your stand | Yes. No card reader. | — | Some do. |
Want the long version, with each app's own pages as sources? The safest way to get paid in a private sale.
Payment-app statements are general, as of September 2026; check each app’s own terms. Nilfpay fee: the buyer pays 4%, 50¢ minimum, at checkout. Sellers pay $0.
Classifieds
Still posting on classifieds? Keep posting.
Most classifieds sites don’t take payments at all. That’s fine — that part is what Nilfpay is for.
If you sell on Craigslist, keep doing it — by-owner posts there are free — and just add your Nilfpay link and QR so the getting-paid part is handled.

FAQ
Straight answers
Is it really free for me?
Yes. Sellers pay $0. No monthly fee, no listing fee, no cut of your sales. The buyer pays a small service fee at checkout — 4%, with a 50¢ minimum.
Do I need a bank account?
No. If you have one, you get daily payouts to it. If you don’t, pick up your payout in cash at Western Union or MoneyGram. Either way, the money is yours the day you sell.
Can I still meet in person?
Yes. Meet wherever you like — a lot of Texas police departments now have a safe-exchange spot in their parking lot. The difference is you get paid first. Your buyer opens your link or scans your QR and pays by card on their phone. Then you hand it over.
Can I get paid before I make a custom order?
Yes. Send the payment link when they order. When it’s paid, you start. That’s the whole trick to no more no-shows on custom cakes, tamale orders, and commissions.
Is selling homemade food legal in Texas?
For most home-baked and home-cooked foods, yes, under the Texas cottage food law (updated September 1, 2025): you sell direct to the customer with personal delivery, you show your labeling and allergen info before they pay, and you stay under $150,000 a year. Put your ingredient and allergen info in your Nilfpay listing. This isn’t legal advice — check the Texas DSHS cottage-food page for the current rules.
