Main Street

Towns where the shops closed.

Towns where the mill closed, the banks left and half the people went with them. What is still open in them is usually one person selling something they make, which is who this company is for. So we write about those places, with the numbers checked.

What closed in the Mississippi Delta, and who stayed

Five towns, four of which have lost between a third and a half of their people since 1980. Almost nobody still there wants to leave. The numbers behind what closed, and the people who stayed anyway.

One piece at a time, and only where we can check what we print. Every figure in these pieces is sourced to the census, the BLS, the CDC, the FDIC or the USDA, and where we are relying on somebody else's reporting we say whose it is and link to it.
