Cash App or Nilfpay: which is safer for selling to a stranger?

For people selling on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace or OfferUp who are deciding how to take money from a stranger. Every statement about another service links to that service's own page.

Quick answer

Cash App is free to receive and, once a payment has begun processing, the buyer cannot cancel it. Between two people it offers no protection and no dispute process that we could find in its terms, and a card-funded payment can still be disputed through the card issuer.

Nilfpay confirms the card payment in your app before the handover, shares nothing but your shop page and QR code, and has a dispute process with a person reviewing the evidence. Sellers pay $0; the buyer pays 4%.

For a small face-to-face sale where you watch your balance update, Cash App is fine. For strangers, larger items and shipping, Nilfpay.

Cash App or Nilfpay: which is safer for selling to a stranger?
QuestionNilfpayCash App
Fees for me, the seller $0 for you. The buyer pays a 4% service fee, 50¢ minimum, added at checkout. [1] Receiving a personal payment costs you nothing. The sender pays 3% when they fund it with a credit card. A Cash App business account pays 2.75% per payment received. Instant Deposit to your bank costs 0.5% to 1.75% ($0.25 minimum); a standard deposit is free and takes 1 to 3 business days. [2]
Can the buyer fake the payment No. The card payment is captured at checkout and the order shows as Paid in your app before you hand anything over. There is no screenshot to trust and nothing to check on the buyer’s phone. The payment itself cannot be faked, but the proof can. Look at your own Cash App balance, never the buyer’s screen. [3]
Can the buyer reverse it later Rarely, and never silently. The buyer can open a dispute with Nilfpay, and card disputes exist on top. Your pickup code or your delivery tracking is your evidence. If a card dispute is lost after the handover, you carry it. Not by the buyer once sent. Cash App’s terms: “You will not be able to cancel the transfer once the transfer has begun processing.” A payment funded by a card can still be disputed by the buyer with their card issuer. [4]
Do I have to share my phone number or bank details No. The buyer sees your shop page, its name, your link or QR code, and any social links you choose to add. Never your phone number, email or bank details. Partly. The buyer needs your $Cashtag, phone number or email, or scans your QR code. Your bank details stay private. [5]
Do I get the money instantly The order shows as Paid the moment the buyer pays. Payouts go out daily and land in your US bank account the next business day, or you pick the money up in cash at Western Union or MoneyGram. Into your Cash App balance, yes. Into your bank, free in 1 to 3 business days or an Instant Deposit fee. [2]
Works for in-person sales Yes. The buyer scans your QR code or opens your link and pays on their phone. They read you a 4-digit pickup code and you hand over. Yes. Watch your own balance update before the handover.
Works for shipped items Yes. You set a flat delivery fee, then mark the order shipped with the carrier and tracking number. Tracking that shows delivery to the buyer’s address counts as delivered. Without it, an item-not-received dispute goes to the buyer. It works as a transfer. We found no buyer or seller protection for payments between two people in Cash App’s terms; for merchants with an ordering profile the terms say the transaction is “between you and that merchant, not Cash App.” [4]
What happens if the buyer disputes The buyer opens it in Nilfpay. A person reviews the order, the pickup code or the tracking, and the messages, then decides. The buyer can also dispute with their card issuer. No Cash App process between two people for a personal payment. A buyer who paid with a card can dispute with the card issuer. [3]
Who it is best for Sales to strangers where you want the money confirmed before the handover, custom orders you want paid before you start, and anything you ship. Small in-person sales with a buyer who already uses it, where you check your balance before handing over.

Trade-offs

Where each one is strong, and where it is not

Nilfpay

Where it is strong

  • The payment is confirmed in your own app before you hand over. No screenshots, no checks, no waiting to see if it clears.
  • You share a link or a QR code, nothing else. Your phone number and bank details stay with you.
  • Free for the seller. The buyer pays the 4% fee at checkout.
  • A dispute process with a person reading the order, plus your pickup code or tracking as evidence.
  • Refunds are one tap and go back to the buyer’s card in full.

Where it is not

  • You are paid out the next business day, to a US bank account or as cash at Western Union or MoneyGram, not on the spot.
  • The buyer pays 4% on top of your price. On a $20 item some buyers will ask why.
  • A card dispute lost after the handover is yours to carry. Enter the pickup code and keep tracking for shipped orders.
  • For a $40 desk sold face to face, cash is simpler. Orders above $2,500 in one order, or $10,000 in a month go through an additional verification step before payout.

Cash App

Where it is strong

  • No fee to receive a personal payment, and it lands in your balance right away.
  • Once sent, the buyer cannot cancel it from their side.
  • You can hand the buyer a $Cashtag or a QR code instead of a phone number.

Where it is not

  • No protection between two people that we could find in Cash App’s terms, and no dispute process.
  • A card-funded payment can still be disputed through the card issuer.
  • Fake payment screenshots and “business account upgrade” messages target Cash App sellers too. Only your own balance counts.
  • A business account costs 2.75% per payment.

FAQ

Questions sellers ask

Can a buyer cancel a Cash App payment after I hand over?

Not from their side. Cash App’s terms say you will not be able to cancel the transfer once it has begun processing. A buyer who funded the payment with a card can still dispute it with their card issuer, and that is the reversal path to think about.

Can someone fake a Cash App payment?

The transfer, no. The proof, yes: a screenshot or a notification-style email is easy to fake. Open your own Cash App and look at the balance before you hand anything over.

Do I have to share my phone number for Cash App?

Not necessarily. A buyer can pay your $Cashtag or scan your QR code. Your bank details stay private either way. With Nilfpay the buyer sees your shop page and QR code and nothing else.

Is there any protection if a Cash App buyer disputes?

Between two people, no process that we could find in Cash App’s terms. A card-funded dispute goes through the card issuer, where you have little say. With Nilfpay, the buyer opens the dispute in the app and a person reviews the order, the pickup code or the tracking, and the messages.

What does Nilfpay cost the seller?

Nothing. The buyer pays a 4% service fee, 50¢ minimum, at checkout. Payouts go out daily and land the next business day, in your US bank account or as cash to pick up at Western Union or MoneyGram.

When is Cash App the better choice?

Small in-person sales with a buyer who already uses it, where you check your balance before handing over, and payments between people who know each other.
